Disability Sports Club now open in West Drayton

Young disabled people are being urged to join a free new sports club, which has been branded a ‘fantastic’ addition to Hillingdon.

The Disability Sports Club, based at the West Drayton Young People Centre, opened its doors for the first time earlier this month and it runs every Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm.

It is funded by English Sports Council and run by Disability Sports Coach, an organization that provides sporting opportunities for people with disabilities throughout the UK.

Gemma Lewis, a youth professional worker at West Drayton Young People's Centre, said: “Our disability project in West Drayton, which is called SPARKS, has now a sports element to it, with the introduction of specialist sports coaches.”

The new club introduces young disabled people, who are over 11 years old, to a variety of sports including, athletics, judo, fencing and sitting volleyball.

Cllr Douglas Mills, Cabinet member of Community, Commerce and Regeneration at Hillingdon Council said: “This Sports Club is a fantastic new addition to the Hillingdon borough. We encourage all young people from Hillingdon and West Drayton to come along to a session or two. It is a great chance to improve fitness and wellbeing, build confidence, meet new people and forge new friendships.”

Max Woods, the lead youth support worker at the Young People’s Centre, also mentioned that: “The disability sports club is really important for our town. There is not much opportunity for disabled people here, so this new centre is a chance for them to come, chill out and enjoy themselves.”

Another disability sports club for children and teenagers, aged between 8 and 19 years old, is also run by the Hillingdon Council. It is situated at Queensmead Sports Centre, South Ruislip and meets on Saturdays from 1.45pm to 3.15pm.
